Hassan Jameel and the Uber Deal: What the ALJ-Uber MOU Means for Saudi Mobility
Hassan Jameel and Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi signed a memorandum of understanding at a ceremony attended by Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Transport, Saleh Al-Jasser, during the Saudi-U.S. Investment Forum in Riyadh.
The agreement between Abdul Latif Jameel and Uber Technologies outlines a plan to build a fleet operations platform covering both conventional ride-hailing and autonomous vehicle deployment. It also sets a target of creating 30,000 earning opportunities for Saudi nationals.
“Our collaboration with Uber reflects a shared vision for a smarter, more accessible, and autonomous mobility future,” Jameel said. “We are proud to be working with such a renowned technology leader, as we support Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and position the Kingdom as a role model for the future of mobility.”
Khosrowshahi described Saudi Arabia as a priority market. “We’re thrilled to collaborate with Abdul Latif Jameel to advance and accelerate a future of mobility that is electric, shared, and autonomous in the country,” he said.
Uber currently works with 18 autonomous vehicle partners worldwide. Saudi Arabia is seen as a testing ground for AV integration within a fast-urbanizing environment, and Abdul Latif Jameel brings the operational infrastructure and local knowledge that Uber needs to scale fleet management in the Kingdom. The full terms of the memorandum of understanding with Uber Technologies outline how both parties will work together on fleet operations, AV deployment and economic development.
Hassan Jameel has positioned the deal within a broader thesis about the direction of mobility. Abdul Latif Jameel signed a separate memorandum of understanding with Joby Aviation around the same period, covering the potential distribution of up to 200 electric air taxis in Saudi Arabia, with estimated value reaching $1 billion over coming years.
Joby plans to carry its first passengers in Dubai in 2026. Abdul Latif Jameel and the Jameel family have existing ties to Joby through the company’s Series C funding round, which Toyota Motor Corporation led in 2020.
Taken together, the Uber and Joby agreements mark a deliberate push by Abdul Latif Jameel to move beyond its historical role as a vehicle distributor and into the infrastructure layer of next-generation transport.
